Anti-Glare Glasses

The Benefits and Aftercare of Anti-glare Glasses

anti-glare glasses

Today, there is more technology involved in our daily lives than ever before, and this is only going to increase with time… meaning that we all spend large proportions of our day looking at screens and bright lights that can cause eye strain. To avoid the discomfort of strained eyes and poor eye health, anti-glare glasses have grown in popularity, as they further protect your eyes without compromising on your looks!

Why glare is such a pain

Glare is that harsh, blinding light that makes you squint. It can come from the sun, overhead lighting, car headlights, shiny surfaces, and of course screens. Too much of it for too long can leave your eyes feeling tired and dry, and lead to eye strain, fatigue, and headaches. It can even contribute to long-term issues like macular degeneration. That’s where anti-glare glasses can genuinely help.

How anti-glare glasses work

Anti-glare glasses are usually called anti-reflective or AR-coated glasses. The lenses have a very thin coating that cuts down reflections on the front and back of the lens. This means there is less light bouncing around on the lens surface, so more of it goes where it should and you see more clearly. The coating is made from ultra-thin layers of materials (often things like metal oxides) stacked in a way that reduces reflection.

Benefits of anti-glare glasses

When reflections are reduced, your eyes don’t have to work as hard to “push through” glare. That’s especially noticeable with screens, bright offices and night driving.

With fewer reflections, things look a bit crisper. This can be extra helpful if your prescription is stronger, where reflections can be more distracting.

  • They look better on your face

AR coating also makes lenses look clearer in photos and in conversation. People can actually see your eyes instead of a bunch of light bouncing off your glasses.

  • Extra screen protection - with the right coating

Some coatings also include a blue-light filter. Whether blue light coatings make a big real-world difference is still being debated, but plenty of people like them for long screen days.

A quick reality check

Anti-glare coatings help a lot with reflections and comfort. But things like “anti-fatigue” lenses, blue-blocking filters and anti-glare screen protectors still have mixed evidence behind them and the benefits can vary from person to person.

How to look after AR-coated lenses

  • Clean them with a microfibre cloth and lens spray (or lukewarm water with a tiny bit of mild soap)
  • Avoid wiping them dry with a t-shirt or tissues, they can scratch the coating
  • Skip harsh cleaners or anything alcohol-heavy unless it’s made for lenses
  • Give them a quick rinse first if they’re gritty, rubbing dust into the lens is how scratches happen
